The ability to be alone

I think it's crucial as an artist to enjoy one's own company, and in the words of a favourite song, not let 'the sound of your own wheels drive you crazy'.

I'm not advocating becoming a hermit, however there's just no getting around the fact that as an artist there will be some hours spent in your own company. Even if you work in a collective space, such as a studio, or shared office space, there are times when an artist needs to be deeply absorbed in the work. I enjoy these times in my studio very much. Hours pass like minutes.

That being said, some of the most enjoyable company can be found doing a focused activity alongside others doing the same thing. Which is one of the reasons I started a social drawing club over 2 years ago. It is possible to enjoy the company of others even if not engaged in constant conversation.

Some days we have a lot of banter, and other days our silence and focus is probably a sight to behold. It must catch the attention of passers by - a large group of sketchers, not talking but silently focused on something in the midst of a frequently chaotic and noisy cafe.
